Description
I finally had the opportunity to photograph a local feathered celebrity here in Burnaby,BC just outside of Vancouver, BC, the Mandarin Duck.
This lone male has been spotted in and around Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake since last year. No one knows where he came from but seems to found a new home.
I photographed a number of images of the Mandarin Duck to be included in this series.
What really sets this duck apart from the rest is his colorful plumage. He really is very handsome and proud.
Being a native of East Asia it is rare to be seen out of its native habitat. But there has been Mandarin Ducks establishing in Great Britain, Dublin Ireland, Black Mountain North Carolina, Sonoma County California, and a single one in New York's Central Park. This population is the result of several ducks escaping from captivity, then reproducing in the wild.
It is closely related to the North American Wood Duck, the only other member of the genus Aix. Aix is an Ancient Greek word to refer to an unkown diving bird used by Aristotle.
